Staircases are handy metaphors for writers. They can lead to the mad woman in the attic and other secrets or represent a journey into the subconscious. Some are wide and sweeping, some are rickety and others are spiral. They’re often part of a chase scene, but also lend themselves to suspense or horror and even romance. A most versatile architectural feature, I’m sure you’ll agree.
Your writing prompt: Write a scene involving a staircase. Where does it lead? Is your character going up or coming down? What does it look like and how does it sound underfoot?
